"Makro Money"
is a major project of The Jones Collection. Banknotes are the central focus of this series created by artist Pete Jones. Employing a special technique to photograph the notes he creates poetic images that refocus the viewer's attention and reinterpret the meaning of money. Through his unprecedented way of looking at banknotes his work can take us on historical journeys to places which no longer exist, show us magical juxtapositions in nature and culture and highlight the multifaceted beauty of money.
Art history is full of collectors and patrons, without whose donations important artists, even entire artistic milieus, would not have been able to survive. But it is also full of examples of the rich and powerful attempting to ennoble, whitewash, and sanctify their reckless handling of money and power through art. Pete Jones dares to take a new look at money and creates art from global banknotes.
Art history is filled with collectors and patrons whose support allowed great artists — even entire artistic circles — to survive. Yet it is equally full of the wealthy and powerful who have tried to ennoble, even mask, their ruthless dealings with money and power through art.
As Jones travels the world, he explores what lies behind money itself. He begins by documenting how different cultures handle it, and eventually starts photographing world banknotes in a highly distinctive way. From this process emerge artworks that reveal the many facets of “the beautiful illusion.” His method resembles that of a sculptor who creates a new form by chiseling away everything unnecessary. Jones, too, removes all that is superfluous in his photographs and adds nothing to the banknotes. Through this approach, his MAKRO MONEY works bring to light details we
overlook in everyday encounters with currency.
Tiny details, exotic landscapes, political and historical events, the faces of notable figures, kings and despots — or simply surreal, brightly colored fish. Jones approaches his subject with utmost, almost surgical precision. Yet he never intervenes; he merely sharpens our perception of money, creating a new and unprecedented way of seeing the beauty of banknotes and the multifaceted nature of money.
Why This Matters Now
In a market where financial firms often communicate in similar ways, Currency Research has another opportunity to differentiate itself through intelligence, cultural literacy and boldness. Jones’ work gives Currency Research a platform to say:
• We understand value beyond numbers.
• We see what others overlook.
• We are not afraid to examine the foundations of capital itself.
• We are a firm that thinks — and sees — differently.
We believe this is the kind of message that resonates with clients who expect more than performance; they expect perspective.
What we ask for:
Full production costs (printing, framing, travel expenses, insurance, booth build).
Makro Money
With Makro Money, Jones uses macro photography to reveal the hidden details of everyday currency. By magnifying textures, symbols, and design elements, he highlights money as a cultural object that carries stories far beyond its practical function.
In a time when cultural funding is dwindling, democratic values are eroding, and efficiency is becoming the ultimate goal, Jones poses the crucial question: What remains of art, music, and diversity when their value is measured solely in numbers?
"If money no longer has culture, what is democracy worth?"
